Small Business Series - Coal Creative

“It was important for me to have a role that I…knew I could grow into, where I could learn what I needed to do to fulfill it, says Holly Pilcavage, Director of Business Development and Operations of Coal Creative Marketing. “Whether it’s a small business, or personally, I need to know that there’s growth opportunity.” This focus on growth appears to be a central theme for not only Pilcavage herself, but for Coal Creative, located in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

After its founding approximately eight years ago by President/CEO Gerard Durling, Coal Creative continued to expand within the industry, and with the expansion of its services, ballooned to provide work for seven employees, as well as provide hands-on educational opportunities for sets of three to five interns three times a year. Today, the business’s services include video productions of numerous styles (such as the recently-added animation utility), web design and development, graphic and print design, social media services, and general strategy and consulting.

Holly, who has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, has been with the company since October 9th, 2016. She remembers her first day was an unconventional one, and says, “It was a Sunday, and I actually came in and helped paint all of the walls…that was my official first day!”

She says she was drawn to the company by its dedication to helping the community, and was all-in after a handful of conversations with founder Gerard Durling. “I fe

ll in love with the idea of the company,” she says, “Gerard is very connected to non-profits and things like that in the area, and that really spoke to me right from the beginning.”

A dedication to modernity, freshness, and flexibility seems to be Coal Creative’s formula for success, and perhaps more importantly, the friendliness and inherent p

eople-skills of its staff. “We really care,” says Pilcavage, “you go to some companies, and they literally have to train people in how to be nice to other people. I’ve never felt for a mome

nt that I had to sit down with somebody to say ‘This is not how you speak to a client.’ Everyone is so naturally kind, which I think is important, and we all have a passion…for what we do and for one another.”

Coal Creative is one of the newest members of the Wyoming County Chamber, joining just a few week ago! The business is a member of the Greater Wilkes-Barre

Chamber as well, but saw a membership to the Wyoming County Chamber as an additional opportunity. “Sometimes you don’t realize what’s out there! It just kind of made sense, just knowing that there’s the opportunity to help so many businesses up there too,” Holly says, “It really is a beautiful area, and walking down the main street in Tunkhannock, you almost feel like you’re in a little bit of a fairytale land!”
